Steve Ryder talks through some key betting trends and analyses those still in contention for the world's famous race on the final day of the Aintree Festival.
I Am Maximus
Won the race last year off a mark of 159 and he races this year off only an 8lb higher mark. Like last season, he has finished down the field at Leopardstown in Grade 1s at Christmas and at the Dublin Racing Festival. He had to miss his prep in the Bobbyjo Chase last time, which he won last year, with a respiratory infection.
Royale Pagaille
Won his second Grade 1 Betfair Chase winner this season on soft ground but has been below form since. Would likely appreciate softer ground than he will encounter on the day.
Nick Rockett
Hits a lot of recent trends for the race (age, first run in the race, second season chaser, run less than 10 times over fences, won last time out, never fallen or unseated) and arrives into the race in form. Won the Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park in January off a mark of 152 before winning the Bobbyjo Chase last time which his stablemate I Am Maximus won last year prior to victory in this race.
Grangeclare West
Fragile nine-year-old who has only had 11 races under rules in his career. Won a Grade 1 Novice Chase last season at Leopardstown and ran well to finish 2nd behind Galopin Des Champs in the Irish Gold Cup this year. Disappointed when last of five last time at Navan in the Grade 2 Webster Cup Chase last time.
Hewick
Won the 2023 King George VI Chase at Kempton and finished a close 2nd at Down Royal in the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Champion Chase this season in November. Won over hurdles at Thurles last time on good ground and the better the ground, the better his chance. He will be ridden by Gavin Sheehan for the first time since with King George VI Chase success.
Minella Indo
12-year-old who won the 2021 Cheltenham Gold Cup before finishing runner-up the year after. Finished 2nd on his reappearance at Punchestown but was disappointing at Navan when 6th beaten 25 lengths over hurdles last time.
Appreciate It
11-year-old who won the 2021 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Recorded his third win over fences last time at Thurles in the Grade 2 Horse & Jockey Hotel Chase when he beat two better fancied stablemates under Sean O’Keefe.
Minella Cocooner
Won the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown last season off a mark of 151 and will be running off only 6lbs higher in this race. Was well beaten in Grade 1s on his first three starts this season behind the likes of Fact To File and Galopin Des Champs before finishing 4th beaten 8 ¼ lengths by Nick Rockett in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse last time.
Conflated
11-year-old who won two Grade 1s in 2022. Finished a respectable 8th in the Plate at the Cheltenham Festival last time despite a bad mistake at the second last fence but looks up against it off the same mark.
Stumptown
The eight-year-old has proved a revelation since competing in Cross Country chases and is unlucky not to have won his previous five starts. Defied a rating of 157 to win at the Cheltenham Festival by seven lengths last time in first-time cheekpieces and he gets to run here off the same mark.
Hitman
Has stamina to prove over this trip having only won over as far as 2m5½f in his career. Has finished 2nd on all three of his starts so far this season and doesn’t find as much off the bridle in a finish as you would expect.
Beauport
Runs in the famous colours of Corbiere who won this race in 1983 and is trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies who has twice won this race as a trainer. The nine-year-old won the Berkshire National at Ascot by 31 lengths earlier this season before running well to place in two Graded hurdles since. The choice of Sam Twiston-Davies over stablemate Broadway Boy.
Bravemansgame
Paul Nicholls has booked James Reveley to ride the 2022 King George VI Chase winner. He was most recently seen finishing 3rd in the Grade 2 Denman Chase at Newbury but should enjoy the unique jumping test.
Chantry House
Surprised connections by winning at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day by 6½ lengths but was subsequently well beaten in the Grade 2 Cotswold Chase on his next start. The 11-year-old is a previous two-time Grade 1 winner but both owner and trainer appear to have stronger chances.
Threeunderthrufive
Paul Nicholls has booked Harry Skelton to ride this 10-year-old who came close to a repeat success in the Swinley Chase last time when 2nd to Ascot specialist Victtorino. The better the ground, the better his chance and he is another who will relish this unique jumping test.
Perceval Legallois
Another well fancied JP McManus owned runner who won over hurdles at the Dublin Racing Festival having won the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown at Christmas. The eight-year-old has never raced outside of Ireland but should hold leading claims if coping with the travel.
Kandoo Kid
The choice of Harry Cobden of the five Paul Nicholls trained runners in the race. Won the Coral Gold Cup on his reappearance at Newbury in November off a mark of 145 and is now only 7lbs higher. Had a prep run at Newbury last time over an inadequate trip and he bids to emulate Many Clouds who won the Coral Gold Cup (formerly the Hennessy) before winning this in 2015.
Iroko
Another leading contender for JP McManus who had this race highlighted as his target early on this season. The seven-year-old won the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in 2023 and finished 2nd to subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin at Aintree in the Grade 1 Mildmay Novices’ Chase last season. He has only won over as far as 2m4f in his career so stamina would be his big concern as well as the fact he fell at Ascot earlier this season.
Intense Raffles
Progressive seven-year-old trained by Tom Gibney who won the Irish Grand National on his final start last season. Was well beaten on his first two starts this season over hurdles before finishing 2nd beaten only ¾ length by Nick Rockett in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse last time. He has excelled on soft and heavy ground in the past.
Senior Chief
Won at Cheltenham in October on his reappearance before finishing 6th in the Coral Gold Cup behind Kandoo Kid on his next start. Finished midfield over hurdles last time at Naas but could be well backed.
Idas Boy
Was previously a high class chaser for Gigginstown House Stud and Noel Meade but showed very little on his stable debut for Richard Phillips at Doncaster for new connections.
Fil Dor
Bought for 620,000 euros at the Caldwell dispersal sale last year but has only won once since which was a match race at Thurles at odds of 1/40. Finished 3rd in the Grade 2 Webster Cup Chase at Navan last time over 2m4½f and has to prove his stamina over this longer trip.
Broadway Boy
The Nigel Twiston-Davies trained seven-year-old finished placed behind both Senior Chief and Kandoo Kid earlier this season but has since been disappointing at Cheltenham on his previous two starts.
Coko Beach
10-year-old who has competed in the previous three renewals of the race with his best finish being when 8th beaten 66 lengths in 2022. Finished 9th in the Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last time and he looks up against it once again this year.
Stay Away Fay
Won the 2023 Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle before winning his first two starts over fences. With form figures of PPP0 he is hard to make the case for.
Meetingofthewaters
Finished 7th in this race last year off a mark of 147 and he runs in it off a 1lb higher mark this year. Has run poorly on his three starts so far this season including when racing off a mark of only 112 over hurdles on his penultimate start.
Monbeg Genius
Finished 3rd behind Corach Rambler in the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in 2023. Won at Uttoxeter last time by five lengths off a mark of 142 and races here off only a 5lb higher mark. Would appreciate soft ground.
Vanillier
Finished 2nd to Corach Rambler in this race in 2023 when only beaten 2 ¼ lengths off a mark of 147 before finishing 14th last season off a mark of 151. Races this year off a mark of 147 again but arrives in much better form than previously. Beat Coko Beach by 18 lengths in first time blinkers in February before finishing 3rd behind Stumptown at the Cheltenham Festival despite nearly taking the wrong course.
Horantzau d’Airy
Ex Willie Mullins trained eight-year-old who was bought at an online auction for 50,000gns and is now in training with Michael Keady. Has finished midfield at Leopardstown on his previous two starts following two good runner-up efforts earlier this season.
Hyland
Won his first two starts this season at Cheltenham before chasing home The Jukebox Man in the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day. Was a beaten favourite when 2nd at the same track in February in the Ladbrokes Trophy. All of his best form has come on good ground.
Celebre D'Allen
13-year-old who has finished the course in the Becher Chase and the Topham Chase twice and comes into the race having won at Bangor in November when last seen. Also holds an entry in the Topham again the day before the Grand National.
Three Card Brag
Chased home both Corbetts Cross, Monty’s Star and Spillane’s Tower as a novice chaser last season before winning a Beginners Chase at Navan in January. Finished 3rd in a Grade 2 Novice Chase at Navan in February behind stablemates Better Days Ahead and Stellar Story who both went on to finish placed in the Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
Twig
Finished 2nd in the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last season off a mark of 143 and he runs here off only a 3lbs higher mark. He ran over hurdles on his first three starts of the season before finishing 7th in the Grimthorpe Chase last time back over fences.
Duffle Coat
Finished 2nd in the Galway Plate earlier this season and was in the process of running into the places in the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last time when brought down at the second last fence. Could outrun his huge odds.
